Our Haitian Pump Repair & Replacement
In Haiti, where access to clean water remains a challenge, hand pump repair or replacement is vital for community well-being. Many rural areas, like Northeastern Haiti, rely on hand pumps for their water, but frequent breakdowns due to harsh conditions and overuse leave residents struggling.
When Turning Point Missions first began working in Haiti, we partnered with Living Hope Missions sending short term mission teams to repair or replace broken hand pumps. There are thousands of broken hand pumps throughout Haiti, leaving families and entire communities without a reliable water source. When pumps fail, women and children must walk long distances (sometimes several miles) to get water, often at the expense of education and economic opportunities.
We used our last available new hand pump in January of 2020 during the onset of Covid. The pandemic restrictions and governmental unrest, we were not able to order more hand pumps until late summer of 2023. A total of 125 new India Mark II hand pumps plus100 feet of new piping for each pump and spare parts for another 50 pumps arrived in December of 2023. However it took us until March of 2024 to settle the custom charges for the equipment. In the summer of 2025, we hired two Haiti men, Ubert and Jonas, full-time to repair/replace hand pumps. Ubert is a pastor and Jonas an elder in his church. Neither of them is shy about sharing the Gospel while fixing hand pumps. The main problem with our hand pump work is every time we fix a hand pump, we are told about two or more broken pump. When fixing the pumps, the local men are encouraged to help the team and to get “buy in” from the residents they are asked to pay for and construct the slab around the hand pump.
Beyond convenience, these efforts improve health by providing access to safe water, and curbing waterborne diseases. Economically, they free up time for education and income generating activities, fostering resilience and hope for Haiti’s future. Hand pump initiatives are a lifeline for Haiti’s residents.

Repairing a hand pump, often eliminates the need for residents—often women and children—to walk kilometers to fetch water, saving hours daily and reducing physical strain. For instance, in Port-au-Prince, Solea Water’s repairs have revived thousands of wells, ensuring safe, chlorinated water flows again. Replacement with durable models like the LifePump, which operates at depths up to 330 feet, offers long-term reliability, reducing repair frequency and empowering communities with sustainable solutions.
